Award Year Timeline
ACSTO has 3 award cycles per award year. Our award year begins in April and finishes at the end of April in the following year. All applications are considered 'current' within the duration of the award year in which they are received. Once an award year finishes at the end of April, all applications expire, regardless of when they were received, and you must send in a brand new application for every student you wish to be considered for future awards.
In short, our applications correspond with the school year. We need a new application for each upcoming school year, which is always available in April.
When you submit an application, whether by mail, fax, or online, ACSTO will issue a postcard back in the mail to confirm that we received it. If you tried to send an application, but have not received a postcard within a week or two, give us a call.
April 15 - Applications become available for the new award/school year.
April 15 - Donation deadline for those wishing to take advantage of the April 15 relate-back. This is the official tax year deadline for the previous calendar year, so donors must have their donations either called in, done online, or postmarked by this date in order to claim credit for the previous year. There are no extensions.
Many people like to give at this time because they can immediately file their taxes after making a donation and receive the credit.
May 31 - Application deadline.
This is the first award cycle for the new award year, so everyone needs to send in a new application by this time every year.
June - Decisions for the Original tax credit scholarship awards are make in late June. Scholarships awarded during this distribution can only be used for the upcoming school year.
July - Decisions for the Overflow/PLUS awards are made by late July. Scholarships awarded during this distribution can only be used for the upcoming school year.
September 30 - Application deadline.
If you already submitted an application for the Summer award cycle you are still current and do not need to send it again.
October - Decisions for the Original tax credit scholarship awards are made in late October. Scholarships awarded during this distribution can only be used for the current school year.
November - Decisions for the Overflow/PLUS tax credit scholarship awards are made in late November. Scholarships awarded during this distribution can only be used for the current school year.
February 28 - Application deadline.
This is only for those who have not yet submitted an application during this award year. If you already submitted an application for the Summer or Fall award cycle, you are still current and do not need to send it again.
March - Decisions for the Original tax credit scholarship awards are made in late March. Scholarships awarded during this distribution can be used for the current or the upcoming school year.
April - Decisions for the Overflow/PLUS tax credit scholarship awards are made in late April. Scholarships awarded during this distribution can be used for the current or the upcoming school year.
The deadlines above apply for both the Original and the Overflow/PLUS scholarships.
ACSTO will be making awards for both scholarship opportunities during each award cycle, but they will be part of a seperate process and will not be awarded at the same time.
Donation Due Dates
We don't have specific donation due dates because we always process as many donations as possible before each award cycle. However, we encourage people to try and give by the application deadlines to ensure that it will be processed in time to be used for the upcoming award cycle.
April 30 - All applications expire. Send in new applications by May 31 to
ensure continued eligibility for potential scholarship awards for the new school year.
April 15 - Applications for the new award/school year become available.
April 15 - Due date for taxpayers using the April 15 relate-back to make their donation
and count it for the previous tax year (or when they file their taxes, whichever comes first). Please note: Donations made in March and April will not be awarded until the Summer Award Cycle.
Starting School Next Year?
This is the perfect time to begin this program! If your child will be attending K-12th grade at a Christian private school for the first time in the fall, you may apply for a scholarship during the winter prior to when your child starts at the private school. Send in your application to ACSTO between December 1 and February 28, and any scholarships awarded to your child in the March award cycle can be used for the upcoming school year. We will send the money to the school once you start paying tuition in the summer/fall. A donor is welcome to donate to ACSTO and recommend your child for a scholarship up to one year before your child begins K-12th grade.
What does the Law Mean by Kindergarten?
We understand that to be eligible for a scholarship based on the Private School Tuition Tax Credit Law, the child must be attending a Kindergarten that is just before 1st grade (i.e.: the intention of the Kindergarten is to prepare students to graduate into 1st grade for the next school year). Pre-K, K1-K4, playgroups, and/or intermediary summer school does not qualify. There are exceptions for Pre-K handicapped children spelled out in A.R.S. 43-1601. Call ACSTO for details regarding pre-K students with disabilities.
State regulations do not allow us to 'bank' money for children who are too young to qualify. The earliest you can start raising donations for your child is one year prior to attendance at a private school for grades K-12. Anything received earlier than that will be considered for other children at that school.
